How are Science and Philosophy Related? – Nerding Out ep 24

In this episode of “Nerding Out”, Seth is joined by JonMarc Grodi, executive Director of The Coming Home Network. They explore the intersection of faith and reason, discussing how our understanding of the physical universe can inform our understanding of spiritual realities. The conversation touches on various spiritual traditions and concepts, including the idea that there may be more to reality than what we can directly observe or measure. Through the examples of mythical creatures, they explore the different levels of something being true, especially when it comes to talking to our children when they ask if unicorns and dragons are real.

JonMarc and Seth highlight  that faith and reason  are not mutually exclusive but rather complementary ways of knowing.  This thought-provoking conversation encourages listeners to consider the complex relationships between faith and reason  and think critically about their own beliefs and assumptions.

What Are the Odds of Evolution? – Nerding Out ep 23

In this video we are discussing a controversial topic: Evolution. This is a topic that alienate some Christians and some people in the scientific community. We start with the core claim of evolution, as Darwin stated in his book, that the cause of evolution is “random mutation, and natural selection”. Many people in the scientific community currently accept this “Dogma” as true without questioning. On the other hand some people in Christian communities read the Bible “ad pedem literae” and say that humans are animals are as they always have been, since the beginning of time, rejecting science as untrue. None of these extreme position helps us in the pursue of true. We saw that animals changes, and we know that there were animals before that didn’t exist right now. But that this means that Darwinian Evolution is true? Is Random Mutation a source to improve the chances of survival in the species environment? Please join us in this conversation about Math and Evolution!

In this episode Seth and Cesar get in a deeper discussion about infinity, the different levels of infinity, and what it means that we can acquire the knowledge of infinity although there is nothing infinite in our observable world. Also we discuss higher dimensions and elementary particles that are counterintuitive to our day to day reality. We continue with the conversation of the name of God: “I AM” and what this reveals from our God, and finally we discuss the relationship with Infinity and a God that loves humanity.

Seth and Cesar take a step back and each share some of their journey of faith and how they each came to a point where they could reconcile their faith with their love of science. Seth shared how struggling with people around him who argued for a young earth 7 day creation theology brought him to a point where he sought to reconcile his understanding of science with his understanding of faith. Joining the Catholic Church helped him come to a point where he could pursue both areas of study without any conflict between the two. He discovered many people like Blaise Pascal who were brilliant scientists who were also faithful Christians and studied the world because they believed God made it make sense. They also talk about the impact of Thomas Aquinas on their views of faith and truth.

Georg Cantor was a pioneering mathematician best known for creating set theory and introducing the concept of infinite numbers.

David Hilbert was a central figure in 20th-century mathematics, renowned for his work in areas such as algebra, number theory, and mathematical logic. Hilbert and his students contributed to establishing rigor and developed important tools used in modern mathematical physics. Hilbert was one of the founders of proof theory and mathematical logic. Nowadays Hilbert Complex Space is used to represent qubits in the yet developing quantum computers.

Alan Turing & William Thomas Tutte were two British mathematicians who worked in the area of cryptanalysts during World War II. They both worked to crack encrypted codes the Nazi’s were sending to each other.

Sir Roger Penrose is a British mathematician, mathematical physicist, philosopher of science and Nobel Laureate in Physics. Penrose has contributed to the mathematical physics of general relativity and cosmology.

John Lennox is an English mathematician, bioethicist, and Christian apologist originally from Northern Ireland. He has written many books on religion, ethics, the relationship between science and God.

Gauss, Riemann, and the Thrilling World of Number Theory! – Nerding Out ep 19

Carl Friedrich Gauss and Georg Friedrich Bernhard Riemann made groundbreaking contributions to mathematics, with Gauss known for his work in number theory, statistics, and the theory of Gaussian curves, as well as his contributions to electromagnetism and astronomy. Riemann, a student of Gauss, extended these ideas into new realms with his development of Riemannian geometry, which laid the foundation for Einstein’s theory of general relativity. Riemann also made significant advances in analysis and complex functions, including the Riemann hypothesis, a conjecture about the distribution of prime numbers that remains one of the most famous unsolved problems in mathematics. Their work collectively revolutionized mathematical thinking and had profound impacts across multiple scientific disciplines. They were also devout believers who incorporated their faith into every aspect of their work. Gauss said “God arithmetizes”, and Reimann saw his life as a mathematician as another way to serve God.
